Hasselblad Masters 2010

Thursday, February 3rd, 2011

This week, Hasselblad announced the finalists in their 2010 Masters competition and Nicholas’s work has been included along with nine others in the product category.

For the second year in a row, public votes count as a factor in the winner selection process, so please take a moment and visit this page to submit a vote for Nicholas’s images.

From the Hasselblad press release:

“Selected from more than 2500 applicants by an internal jury of Hasselblad employees, Hasselblad partners and distributors, the quality of submissions for the Masters program continues to increase, raising the bar for entry. More difficult than ever before for even the finest photographers to qualify as finalists, reports Christian Nargaard, Photographer Relations Manager for Hasselblad, and even more challenging to choose 110 finalists from among such exceptional work.”

For the second year in a row, the public is encouraged to vote for their favorite image in each category by registering online. No registration is necessary to view the images, which will be online from February 1 through October 31, 2011. The public poll, which counts as one vote for each category, is an important part of the process.

The remaining votes will be cast by a distinguished panel of industry professionals from around the world: Efrem Raimondi (Italy), Anton Corbijn (England), Joachim Ladefoged (Denmark), Steve McCurry (USA), Danqing Wen (China), Tim Flach (England), Hasse Persson (Sweden), Xie Mo (China), Douglas Kirkland (USA), Thomas Gerwers (Germany), Peter Bialobrzeski (Germany), and Grant Scott (England).”

Photos by Hasselblad Masters Finalists 2010 – Now Online For Voting

02/02/2011 Hasselblad is proud to introduce the 110 Masters Finalists 2010 in special online galleries and invites the public to view the work of these exceptional photographers and vote for their favorite images.

Selected from more than 2500 applicants by an internal jury of Hasselblad employees, Hasselblad partners and distributors, the quality of submissions for the Masters program continues to increase, raising the bar for entry. “It’s more difficult than ever before for even the finest photographers to qualify as finalists,” reports Christian Nørgaard, Photographer Relations Manager for Hasselblad, “and even more challenging to choose 110 finalists from among such exceptional work.”

Photographers from Latin America, India and China, as well as the United States, Germany and the U.K. are well represented in the 2010 competition, proving that the Masters program has a broader reach than ever before. Nørgaard is “proud and happy to see that so many photographers from around the world are participating and that a growing number of talents from Latin America and the Far East have applied to the program.”

A new category, “wildlife,” was added in 2010, increasing the number of finalists to 110 – ten photographers for each category: wildlife, architecture, editorial, fashion/beauty, fine art, general photography, nature/landscape, portrait, products, wedding/social and up-and-coming. The latter category alone attracted more than 1300 applicants, bringing even more energy and creativity to the program.

For the second year in a row, the public is encouraged to vote for their favorite image in each category by registering online. No registration is necessary to view the images, which will be online from February 1 through October 31, 2011. The public poll, which counts as one vote for each category, is an important part of the process.

The remaining votes will be cast by a distinguished panel of industry professionals from around the world: Efrem Raimondi (Italy), Anton Corbijn (England), Joachim Ladefoged (Denmark), Steve McCurry (USA), Danqing Wen (China), Tim Flach (England), Hasse Persson (Sweden), Xie Mo (China), Douglas Kirkland (USA), Thomas Gerwers (Germany), Peter Bialobrzeski (Germany), and Grant Scott (England).

Eleven winners will be chosen, one from each category, and will be provided with high-end Hasselblad equipment and software to work on their Masters project. Once completed, their final projects will be exhibited internationally and published in the third commemorative Masters Book in 2012.

In order to honor the outstanding work of the 300 semi-finalists, Hasselblad will also launch a special online gallery of their images. Visitors to the site will be able to browse through the Masters Semifinals Gallery from February 14 – October 31, 2011.

Hasselblad encourages photographers and non-photographers alike to visit the two galleries at: http://www.hasselblad.com/masters-finalists and cast their votes for the Masters Finalists of their choice in each category.

Hasselblad also extends special thanks for their continued support to partners SanDisk and Broncolor among others.

Surface Magazine: 13th Annual Avant Guardian Competition

Monday, August 2nd, 2010

Nicholas is pleased to announce that his images have been advanced to the semi-finals of Surface Magazine’s 13th Annual Avant Guardian Portfolio photography competition.

“After receiving hundreds of entries, Surface has selected 10 semi-finalists for its annual Avant Guardian Portfolio (AVG) photography competition under the guidance of an expert panel, which this year included Alexis Bittar, Dean and Dan Caten, Nicolas Alan Cope (2009 AVG), Kelly Cutrone, Nian Fish, Tim Hamilton, Reed Krakoff, Sean Patterson, Todd Selby and Viktor & Rolf.

Each of the semi-finalists — all US-based talents that have never published a print editorial previously — will be given a commission for November/December issue of Surface, under the art direction of creative director Matthias Ernstberger for consideration in the portfolio, using all the resources the brand has to offer.

The 2010 semi-finalists are: Isaac Bearman, Michael Casker, Nicholas Duers, Jason Kim, Simone Lueck, Justin Marquis, Tim Melideo, Adrian Nina, Michael Schmidt and Yoshiaki Sekine.”

Of the semi-finalists, Nicholas is the sole still-life photographer. We offer a big thanks to this year’s judging panel, and invite you to keep an eye on surfacemag.com for the results, coming in fall 2010.
